A beautiful and refined relative of the much more commonly grown Vitex agnus-castus, cutleaf Chinese chaste tree actually grows as a small to medium shrub in our district. The deeply incised foliage forms a lacy presence in the garden, which is accentuated for many weeks in summer by fragrant clouds of delicate pale-lavender flowers held in branching racemes. It's also considerably hardier than "regular" chaste tree, typically proving wood-hardy through Zone 6, and root-hardy through Zone 5, where it can be grown as a die-back perennial. Zone 5. Propagated from seed. Deep 3.5-inch pots. Photos: cultivar413, licensed under CC BY 2.0
