Plantago sempervirens

Seaside goldenrod naturally occurs (and thrives) in hostile habitats such as beaches, dunes, and oceanside cliffs -- so it's perfectly adapted to handle exposure to heat, drought, and salt spray. If you're looking for native perennials for a hellstrip planting, this should be near the top of the list. Handsome basal leaves and wands of sunny flowers on 2-foot stems in late summer also make it an excellent choice for sunny perennial borders where conditions are not so exiguous. Propagated from seed. Deep 3.5-inch pots. Zone 3. Photo: Famartin
