One of our favorite penstemons, Small's beardtongue produces spires of lilac-pink flowers on 2-foot stems for several weeks in late spring and early summer. Its serrated leaves are larger and lusher than those of most other penstemons. Pest-resistant and hummingbird-approved. Well-drained soil and sun to light shade are ideal. Zone 5. Propagated from seed. Deep 3.5-inch pots. Photo: David J. Stang, is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0
