Sweet Cicely is one of those long-cultivated and half-forgotten heirloom plants that completely outclass most of the "new and exciting" productions of the modern mass-market plant mill. Ferny tapestries of fresh-green, licorice-scented leaves arise in spring, followed soon by lacy umbels of white flowers. A queenly presence in a partly shaded perennial border or cottage garden, this beguiling heirloom perennial often throws a few seedlings to add to the display, or to share with a special gardening friend. It's also perfect for anchoring a shaded herb or culinary garden, where its leaves can be harvested to infuse beverages or to flavor stews, stir-fries, or salads.
