An absolutely astonishing eastern and central U.S. native, which will never gain much market share because it takes several years to reach flowering size.  When it does, the lordly, branching spires of large glistening white flowers (morphing to green) are well worth the wait (pollinators agree).  The flowers cast a curious sweet fragrance with fetid undertones, so place it in the back of a border, rather than by an entrance or path. We offer 3- to 4-year-old seedlings that are nearly to flowering size.  The species also goes under the name Melanthium virginicum.

Full to part sun; average to damp soil; 5'x2'; early summer; Zone 5

Propagated from seed; deep 3.5-inch pots
